SWA #23 Topic Proposal

I have chosen captive breeding and the benefits and negatives in relation to populations of endangered species.  This topic is a global issue because if species begin to go extinct that could very adversely affect food chains and ecosystems throughout the world.  While researching I have come across three main different ideas or viewpoints on captive breeding.  One group, mostly made up of researchers and scientists is against captive breeding due to weaker genes being reintroduced in a population because "natural selection" was not at play.  The next group, comprised of various groups of people such as researchers and animal lovers, want to preserve these species to continue researching their effects on the environment and keep ecosystems healthy.  The third group are people who are mostly animal rights activists and believe that animals should have the right to decide whether they want to reproduce or not and with whom.  My position is mostly with the second group and I do support captive breeding but only in certain instances.

  1. Lydia, this is a very interesting topic, and you have identified several perspectives on the captive breeding. However, you need to be more specific in articulating both the issue and four rather than three perspectives. It seems that at least two of the views you are exploring (the first and the last ones) are against captive breeding, although for different reasons. What I am not sure about is what exactly your second perspective is. Do animal lovers and researchers have the same view on the issue? Are they both in opposition to captive breeding or for it? Do all researchers agree on it? And aren't animal rights activists also animal lovers? What makes their perspective different from that of the second group? Considering these questions, you should be able to establish at least four perspectives. Hope this helps!
